The President of the United States attacked Canada again at a news conference after he chaired a meeting of the UN Security Council in New York.
Donald Trump claimed to have refused a one-on-one meeting with Justin Trudeau over the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) as negotiations stalled on the pretext that tariffs from Canada are too high.
I told him to forget that.
Donald Trump, President of the United States
Justin Trudeau spokeswoman Chantal Gagnon, however, argues that “no meeting has been requested” with the US president.
Donald Trump once again asserted that Canada has “treated the US very badly” and that US demand for lower tariffs is not being heard by Canadian negotiators.
“We do not get along with the [Canadian] representative at all. We are very dissatisfied with Canada’s negotiating style, “he said.
“We think [Canadian] negotiators have been enjoying our country for a long time. We had [previously] people who did not know what they were doing, “he says.
“I will not use the term NAFTA,” he added. “If we sign an agreement with Canada, and there is still a good chance it will happen, we will probably call it US-MC [for United States-Mexico-Canada]. But it will probably be, possibly, only US-M [for United States-Mexico]. ”
Donald Trump further argued that if Canada did not sign the new text already accepted by Mexico, the United States would make “a much better deal” by imposing tariffs on cars imported from Canada, which would bring “billions and billions into the [American] coffers”.
Donald Trump also agreed to answer reporters’ questions about the appointment of Judge Brett Kavanaugh, who is facing allegations of sexual abuse by three women .
These allegations “destroy a man’s reputation”. And these are “false accusations,” he says.
He adds that he would withdraw Judge Kavanaugh’s appointment if he thought he was guilty of sexual misconduct.
To the question “Do you believe these women are liars? He said he will closely follow Thursday the public hearing in the Senate of one of the complainants, Christine Blasey Ford , who claims to have been sexually assaulted by the young Kavanaugh during their high school years. “Perhaps I would be convinced [that they are telling the truth],” he said.
But immediately after making this comment, he insinuated that these allegations are not credible.
“It happened to me too. Four or five women were paid to tell stories about me during the election campaign. ”
Trump says he does not exclude “change his mind” on the appointment of Judge Kavanaugh.
Trump wants to keep Rosenstein in office
In another case, President Trump said he “would prefer to keep” the number two US Department of Justice, Rod Rosenstein , in office. According to some American media, Rod Rosenstein would have suggested in 2017 the sidelining of Donald Trump for unfit for the presidential office.
“He says he never said it,” said Donald Trump. He says he has a lot of respect for me. ”
He who oversees the investigation of the special prosecutor Robert Mueller on Russian interference in the 2016 presidential campaign strongly denied on Friday that he raised the possibility of removing President Donald Trump from power.
From the beginning of the press conference, the President also highlighted the good moves made since the beginning of the week in New York, including an agreement with Japan to start negotiations on a bilateral free trade agreement and another with South Korea.
However, he accused China of trying to interfere in the mid-term election process, which will be held on 6 November. “They would like to see me lose an election,” he said, letting his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, be “maybe no longer his friend.”
President Trump rarely addresses journalists at a press conference. He generally favors communication via social media as Twitter.
Iran lambasted, North Korea soon met
On Tuesday, the US president launched a full-fledged charge against the Iranian regime in his annual speech to representatives of the United Nations (UN) member nations meeting in New York. He then called the Iranian regime “corrupt and dictatorial”.
Donald Trump also told the UN this week that he will soon announce the location and date of the next summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un , which will take place in a “very near future”.
He refused, however, to set a deadline for the denuclearization of North Korea, saying it did not matter whether it was over in “two years, three years, or five years”. The head of the White House says that if he had not been elected, a war would have broken out between his country and North Korea.
