Warren, Medina Valley square up in Express-News High School Football Game of the Week

The second Express-News Game of the Week of 2026, Warren and Medina Valley, features two teams that opened their seasons with sizable victories. The Warriors and the Panthers are looking to start their seasons 2-0. 

Warren vs. Medina Valley

Kickoff: 7 p.m. Saturday, Gustafson Stadium 

Rankings/records: No. 11 Warren (1-0, 0-0 District 29-6A), No. 15 Medina Valley (1-0, 0-0 District 14-5A-I)

Coaches: Warren’s Matt Arrufat (4-17 in four seasons, all at Warren); Medina Valley’s Andrew Britt (21-15 in four seasons, all at Medina Valley)

Warren breakdown

Setting the scene: Warren opened its season with a comfortable 56-21 win over Jay last week as the Warriors search for their first postseason berth since 2022. 

Key to victory: Warren quarterback Mac Anderson put on a productive showing against Jay last week, tossing two touchdowns and rushing for two more. Anderson will need to have a similar night to keep Warren in the win column. The Warriors will also have to be prepared to defend the long ball after Medina Valley quarterback Hunter Hurtado threw two touchdown passes with an average of 82.5 yards each.

Medina Valley breakdown

Setting the scene: Medina Valley opened its season with a record breaking performance, putting up 610 yards of offense in a 59-21 win over Churchill. 

Key to victory: The Panthers found success with the ground game last week with four different players rushing for at least one touchdown and had two players who rushed for 100+ yards. While Hurtado showed his arm strength with two long touchdown passes last week, the Panthers can also control the clock by running the ball.
