There is a little more intrigue at the top of the Bundesliga than Bayern Munich supporters might have expected this early in the season.

SC Freiburg, FC Augsburg, and SV Elversberg have all made impressive starts, showing that they are not simply going to make up the numbers.

SC Freiburg has been grinding out results and already look like a difficult opponent for anyone. FC Augsburg has taken things up another level, including an emphatic 4-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt. And then there is SV Elversberg, who just stunned Borussia Mönchengladbach 4-3 and now has Bayern Munich coming to town next weekend.

For Bayern Munich, these are exactly the types of teams that can make a Bundesliga season uncomfortable. They may not have the depth or star power of Vincent Kompany’s squad, but confidence, organization and momentum can make any opponent dangerous.

Bayern Munich remains the clear favorite, but these early-season surprises are a reminder that there will be no free points.

So, from a Bayern Munich perspective: are SC Freiburg, FC Augsburg, or SV Elversberg actually serious threats to the Bavarians — or is this simply early-season excitement?
