LSU locks roster, Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris will not play for the Tigers

The battle over former NFL players returning to college appears to be over, for now.

LSU has reportedly added two players to its roster, bringing the total to 105 players. The Tigers added DE Gabriel Reliford and CB Aidan Anding, per Yahoo Sports. Ross Dellenger.

With the roster at 105 players, neither Dae’Quan Wright nor Zxavian Harris will be allowed to join the LSU roster this season.

Wright and Harris have been in the media and the subject of plenty of discussion because both of them participated in this year’s NFL preseason, going so far as to suit up for preseason games.

After not making their respective NFL rosters, and after the NCAA passed a new eligibility rule allowing players five years of eligibility over five years, both Wright and Harris were looking to return to the college ranks for one more season.

Lawyers got involved, and different injunctions were permitted in different states, and the situation got extremely confusing and murky very quickly.

This sparked plenty of controversy among FBS teams, culminating in the SEC and LSU scheduling court dates to discuss what to do with the school if it in fact added the former pro players. One outcome included the conference removing LSU as a member school, but that seems to have been avoided.

This controversy spans several sports, but at least for now, it appears as if the football issue has been resolved.

Wright and Harris were ruled eligible ahead of LSU’s season-opening game against Clemson. Both players were with new head coach Lane Kiffin at Ole Miss, but Kiffin opted not to add them to the roster at the time, leaving two open spots.

The LSU head coach spoke about the decision during an appearance on “College GameDay,” mainly attributing it to the fact that they didn’t yet know what a punishment, if any, would look like for the program.

“That wasn’t easy. As much as I feel for the players, and I believe that you fight for what you believe in, and I believe that, you know, these kids have an opportunity to play, just like all of the other kids around the country that are winning court cases and being put on rosters.

But the same time, I’m the head coach at LSU and I had to make a decision that is for the big picture of LSU and the LSU football program, with the uncertainties of what potentially could’ve come by adding them to the roster.”

Now with its roster officially set, LSU will look to continue the momentum generated with a Week 1 dominant 51-10 win over Clemson.
