Tobias Harris, signed in free agency this summer, has spent part of his early Spurs tenure in Texas, working out at De’Aaron Fox’s home gym alongside Fox, Victor Wembanyama, and Harrison Barnes. The setup was deliberate. Rather than meeting for the first time in the fall, the group is banking reps and building familiarity now, when there is time to do it without the pressure of a schedule.

That head start matters most for Fox. His first season in San Antonio ended with a high ankle sprain that sapped his production through the Finals, and he never got a clean, healthy summer to sync up with Wembanyama. This is that window. The guard has made no secret of wanting the two of them to form one of the league’s best pick-and-roll pairings, and every rep together now shortens that runway.
For Wembanyama, the sessions fit a pattern. Fresh off All-NBA and All-Defensive First Team honors, he has spent the summer adding to his post game, including time with Hakeem Olajuwon, and organizing runs on two continents. The message from the franchise cornerstone is that last season’s near-miss is fuel for what comes next.
Harris arrives as a 15-year veteran with a reputation for steady scoring and professionalism, exactly the kind of stabilizing presence a young contender can lean on. He framed the value of the work simply.
“I always believe iron sharpens iron, so just being able to be a part of this. I’m gonna enjoy it,” Harris said.
Barnes, back in San Antonio after re-signing, has known Harris since their teens and likes what the group is chasing.
“It’s pretty cool at this point in my career to be playing on a contending team, a team that’s got a lot of potential,” Barnes said.
Fox put the logic plainly. Training camp cannot be the first time a team comes together, or it spends the season playing catch-up. The Spurs are making sure that is not their problem.
