The 2026 fantasy football season is finally here, and tight end remains one of the most challenging positions to navigate week to week. The gap between an elite option and a streaming-level player can be significant, making Week 1 matchups especially important.

For these rankings, I’m weighing expected target volume, offensive role, quarterback play, red-zone opportunity, and, perhaps most importantly, the Week 1 matchup. Several of the league’s top tight ends have favorable matchups, while a few highly drafted players face defenses that could make their fantasy managers sweat.

Keep reading for our full breakdown of the tight end position for the opening week of the 2026 fantasy season.

Week 1 TE Sleepers

Juwan Johnson, Saints

Johnson is my top Week 1 sleeper at tight end. He’s recognized as a late-round value due to his role in New Orleans’ offense, and the game against Detroit might boost his passing volume in a pass-heavy game script.

Brenton Strange, Jaguars

Strange could outperform his ranking. Jacksonville hosts Cleveland at home, and Strange’s receiving ability gives him a path to a surprisingly strong PPR performance.

Week 1 TE Busts

Dalton Kincaid, Bills

Kincaid has the skill to emerge as a top tight end, but facing Houston in Week 1 makes him less reliable than his preseason fantasy standing implies.

George Kittle, 49ers

Kittle can definitely deliver a huge fantasy performance, but his ranking is affected by a key health concern. He is recovering from a torn Achilles, and the 49ers’ season starts against the Rams. If he plays, he remains a tough player to bench, but it’s wise to keep expectations cautious until we see how much he will be used.
