Not a lot of things have gone right for the Cincinnati Reds this season. After their breakout campaign a few years ago, the team hasn’t quite found the same level of success they had in that year. There’s been a few bright spots, yet, but there’s been nothing that allowed the team to be a consistent threat throughout the year.
Against the Los Angeles Dodgers, though, one of their flamethrowers announced his presence to the world again. Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz’s power is unmatched. Whether it’s at the plate or on the field, you can count on him to do something and do it hard. Against Dodgers star pitcher Tarik Skubal, De La Cruz hit a massive two-run homer in the third inning to tie up the game for Cincinnati.

De La Cruz’s home run went for a whopping 444 yards. According to the broadcast booth, that’s the longest home run allowed in Dodger Stadium this season. De La Cruz finished off the third inning in style, saving his center fielder’s mistake by throwing out Teoscar Hernandez at home plate to stop a potential inside-the-park home run. The Reds shortstop threw the ball with a blazing speed of 105.3 miles per hour.

De La Cruz has been one of the stars of this new-age Reds team. One of the hardest hitters in the league, his average exit velocity of 94.4 miles per hour ranks in the 99th percentile in the MLB. This year, the Dominican flamethrower is having the best season of his young career on the plate. His batting average is up to .282 this year, his best mark so far. This uptick in hits has not affected his slugging ability: he’s eighth in on-base plus slugging and 15th in home runs in the National League.
De La Cruz’s success has unfortunately not translated to the win column quite yet. After losing to the Dodgers tonight, the Reds fall to 69-76 on the season. While they haven’t been mathematically eliminated yet, their chances of making the postseason is close to zero at this point.
