No American man has won a Grand Slam singles title since Andy Roddick beat Juan Carlos Ferrero at the 2003 US Open. Ben Shelton is looking to end that drought Sunday, Sept. 13.
Shelton needed five sets to beat defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals, a match that didn’t end until 3:33 a.m., the latest finish in US Open history. He beat Frances Tiafoe in the semifinal by attacking Tiafoe’s second serve, while piling up 20 aces and just three double faults on his own serve. He’s just 23, playing in his first Grand Slam final, with that 23-year American drought now on the line.
Standing across the net is the problem.
Alexander Zverev is 5-0 against Shelton since 2024 and has taken 10 of the 11 sets they’ve played. He’s already won Roland Garros this year and lost the Wimbledon final to Jannik Sinner, making Sunday his third straight Grand Slam final. He’s also spent those five meetings attacking Shelton’s second serve the exact same way Shelton just exploited Tiafoe’s.
The grit that got Shelton past Alcaraz at 3 a.m. won’t be enough alone to get him past Zverev.
