Brian Schottenheimer Reveals Why Cowboys Are Practicing Indoors in Frisco
The Dallas Cowboys are not moving practice indoors because they suddenly want an easier day. Brian Schottenheimer says the decision has more to do with what the heat and humidity are doing to his players.
The Cowboys have been practicing inside again in Frisco, with the Cowboys likely staying indoors for another day, and Schottenheimer gave a pretty unusual explanation for how the team decides when the weather has become too much.
Brian Schottenheimer Is Watching Cowboys Players’ Hydration Levels
Speaking about the Cowboys’ indoor practices, Schottenheimer said humidity is the bigger concern rather than the temperature alone. The Cowboys have been using sweat testing and other methods to track how much fluid its players are losing during workouts.
The Cowboys even have specialized equipment that can help monitor hydration through urine testing. Schottenheimer admitted that the setup sounds a little ridiculous, however, the information helps the coaching staff decide whether players should practice outside or move indoors.
“It’s more of the humidity. We do all the sweat testing. We got these cool urinals. I don’t know how much they cost, but they must be expensive. You pee and it tells you what your urination levels are. It’s crazy. All those things go into it.
That’s what you do as a head coach. ‘Hey, how are the urination levels? … Alright, let’s go inside. … Oh, they’re low, let’s go outside.’”

It sounds funny; however, there is a real reason that the Cowboys are paying attention to it. High humidity can make it harder for the body to cool itself during exercise, and the Cowboys are trying to avoid pushing players too far during practice.
The numbers also give the coaching staff something more concrete than simply guessing whether the conditions are manageable. If the sweat testing shows players are losing too much fluid, there is little reason to force an outdoor session just because it was originally scheduled that way. The Cowboys can make the adjustment before the conditions become a bigger problem. Dallas needs its players to get quality reps, not lose practice time because someone gets overheated or dehydrated.
The Cowboys have already dealt with plenty of physical issues during camp, including Tyler Smith’s thumb injury that required surgery and was expected to keep him out for several weeks. The head coach also has a roster to manage before the regular season, so keeping players available is part of the job.
For now, that means the Cowboys are taking the safer route in Frisco. If the humidity remains high, another indoor practice could be coming, and apparently, Schottenheimer will know when it’s time to go back outside by checking the pee.
