San Antonio native, Cowboys’ Terence Steele faces competition for starting job after recent trade
Former Steele High School standout Terence Steele faces competition for his starting job on the Dallas Cowboys’ offensive line.
Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer said newly acquired offensive tackle Broderick Jones will challenge Steele for the starting right tackle job ahead of Dallas’ Sept. 13 season opener against the New York Giants, according to The Dallas Morning News.
Steele, who played at Steele High School in Cibolo before going on to Texas Tech, has been the Cowboys’ starting right tackle. Dallas acquired Jones, the No. 14 overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft, from the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Schottenheimer said he called Steele shortly after Saturday’s trade to tell him the starting job would be up for competition.

Steele, who is entering his seventh season with Dallas, told Schottenheimer he appreciated the call. The 29-year-old has started 91 of his 96 career games.
The competition represents a change for Steele, who entered training camp as the established starter. Jones, meanwhile, said he welcomed a fresh start after Pittsburgh moved him between left and right tackle.
Schottenheimer said Jones will have to quickly learn the Cowboys’ offense but expects a strong competition for the starting job.
“He’s a very talented young man and we think he and Terence will have a heck of a battle,” Schottenheimer said.
Still, the coach cautioned against counting out the former Steele High School standout.
“I wouldn’t bet against Terence Steele,” Schottenheimer said.
