Mike Burrows’ potential return to Houston Astros on hold because of shoulder inflammation
Right-hander Mike Burrows’ potential return to the Houston Astros is on pause due to inflammation in his throwing shoulder, manager Joe Espada said Tuesday.
Burrows, who has been rehabbing from elbow neuritis, was a candidate to rejoin Houston when rosters expanded Tuesday. However, Burrows’ shoulder “kind of started barking” when he was playing catch Monday, Espada said.
Burrows underwent imaging on the shoulder and “it looks like there’s some inflammation in there,” said Espada, “so he’s kind of day-to-day.”
The issue is ill-timed for Burrows, an option to help the Astros’ tenuous rotation if healthy. Burrows had a 5.99 ERA in 18 outings for Houston before landing on the injured list with the elbow issue, but he’d made three Triple-A rehab starts in which he had a 2.03 ERA over 13 â…“ innings.
Burrows technically remains on a minor-league rehab assignment. The Astros recalled Ronel Blanco from Triple-A to start Tuesday’s game against the White Sox.
